Sipayik ambulance service stops but expected to restart

While the Sipayik ambulance service stopped operating in May because of financial difficulties, the service is being reorganized and expected to start again, although a startup date has not been determined.

Fundraiser planned in Eastport to help aid asylum seekers

A fund-raising event, "Welcoming the Stranger: Downeast Maine Cares," will be held on Monday, August 12, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Eastport Welcome Center at the head of the breakwater. Finger foods will be served and a roster of speakers is in the works.

Artists celebrated for lifetime of work

Orrell retrospective planned

Artist David Orrell knew he wanted to be a painter from about age 10 when he was given a paint set and was in Eastport for the summer. It wasn't just a children's set of inferior art supplies, it was an oil painting kit.

First Downeast Pride Festival to be held in June

The first annual Downeast Pride Festival will be held in Machias and Eastport on the weekend of June 21, with a film festival, ice cream social and dance party scheduled to run from Thursday, June 20, through Saturday, June 22.

Pre release center to be built at prison site

The 15 months of limbo have been resolved for the Downeast Correctional Facility (DCF) in Bucks Harbor, with Governor Janet Mills and the Washington County legislative delegation announcing on May 3 that they have reached an agreement to build a new pre-release center on the existing DCF grounds.
