The rescue of a driver whose car went over the steep cliffs at Grand Manan's Dark Harbour during the middle of the night on Thursday, December 15, is being described as "a Christmas miracle."
The car went down the cliff over 150 feet and did not flip or roll over. The driver, Janice Russell, spent the cold night in the car until she was discovered the next morning with minimal injuries.
The Grand Manan Volunteer Fire Department was promptly on the scene and proceeded to rescue the woman from the deep ravine. When they got to the car, it was astonishing to see how the car had remained upright and stopped before it plunged into the brook below. Firefighters used special equipment to lift Russell from the wreck.
Whether it is a flaming building, flooded basements or life-threatening accidents, Grand Manan volunteer firefighters are on the scene when they are needed.
