Fourth Prepares To Explode
Another fun-filled Old Home Week is planned in the City of Eastport from Saturday, June 30, to Friday, July 6. Old favorites such as a U.S. naval vessel, watermelon eating contest, Independence Day parade, land sports and fireworks will be back, but there are some new activities on the itinerary for this year.
"There will be a mechanical bull vendor in the parking area in front of the police station," reports Barbara Hicks, co-chair of the Eastport Fourth of July Committee. "It has five speeds, so the youngest child can enjoy it, just like those kiddie rides in front of stores, or the most daring can ride it at top speed. They won't be able to stay on. Everything is padded, and there will be a big cushion."
"Laser tag will be held at Library Park on July 2," she adds. "That's for all ages."
A community art project will be headquartered in the former Earth Forms studio on Dana Street, and people are urged to create an inflatable sculpture there with visual artist and sculptor Anna Hepler on July 3 and 4.
Another community project will be featured on July 3 when Thaddeus Holownia snaps a community portrait with an old-fashioned banquet camera at 11:30 a.m. behind Overlook Park.
Scenic airplane rides will be available this year, and Stevie Cee and The Mrs. have been booked on July 4 after the Grand Independence Day Parade. "They perform old-time country music with comedy, like Stacey's Jamboree," says Hicks. "They'll be playing in Library Park."
"And we're very excited about the U.S.S. San Jacinto coming. They should be in at mid-morning on July 1, but there will probably be no public tours of the ship until mid-afternoon," adds Hicks.
A tour of the U.S.S. San Jacinto for military veterans is planned for 10 a.m. on July 2. Everyone should meet at the ship.
