Lubec eyes police department option

Responding to what has been termed a perennial issue, the Lubec Board of Selectmen has established a committee to explore the possibility of establishing a local police department within the town. The action was taken during the regularly scheduled meeting on September 1. According to board Chairman William Daye, the committee is expected to evaluate what would be needed, including costs, in what he termed a "fact‑finding mission." The committee is expected to present their recommendations to the voters at the time of the next town business meeting, set for August 7, 2012.
Selectman Sara McConnell stressed that the committee is expected to fully detail anticipated costs in a "comprehensive report," including such things as benefits and other personnel expenses.
Named to the committee are Joe O'Brien, Russell Wright, Justin Doran, Tony Cannone and Tamielee Profit. Most members have had front‑line experience in the law enforcement field; Doran and Wright are currently employed in that capacity. After the initial meeting, meetings will be open to the public and comments will be welcomed, according to Daye, who added that the purpose of the committee is strictly "fact‑finding" and that the decision whether or not to establish a police department will be up to the voters.
In other action, the select board will advertise for the position of wastewater treatment and recycling supervisor, presently held by Errol "Bunky" Tinker. Tinker, who has held the position for many years, has expressed a desire to "back off" and to continue in an assistant position. Lubec Town Manager John Sutherland observed that this is good for the town, as Tinker has a great amount of knowledge that will remain available for the town. Sutherland added that applicants who hold a wastewater treatment license will be given priority, but that this is not a requirement.
