New international bridge set to open

Nineteen months after the start of construction, the new bridge over the St. Croix River connecting Calais to St. Stephen will be open for business.

Nineteen months after the start of construction, the new bridge over the St. Croix River connecting Calais to St. Stephen will be open for business.

Ted Woo, spokesman for U.S. Customs and Border Protection in Boston, says, beginning at 9 a.m. on Monday, November 16, "all traffic will be allowed to cross over the new bridge."

Truck traffic that has been crossing the Milltown bridge because it has not been allowed to travel over the Ferry Point bridge will now be routed to the customs facility at the new bridge. One of the main reasons for the new border crossing in the area was to alleviate truck traffic in downtown Calais and St. Stephen.

An official ceremonial opening and ribbon-cutting will take place on Monday, November 23, but times have not been determined.
