An early evening house fire displaced a family of seven in Machiasport on December 21, and everything they owned was lost, according to fire personnel on the scene. The fire originated in the attic of the 2 1/2-story house, and its cause is believed to have been a short-circuit in the wiring. A back upstairs bedroom, attic and a portion of the roof were destroyed.
The house on Clarks Point Road is owned by Jeff Chick and was currently being rented by Tanya Graham. Graham, two other adults and four children, ages 9 through 17, were displaced by the fire, but no one suffered any injuries.
Machiasport Selectman and Assistant Fire Chief Mike Hinerman says five departments responded to the fire, which was called in by a neighbor at about 7 p.m. Units responding in addition to Machiasport were from Machias, East Machias, Marshfield and Jonesboro/Roque Bluffs, with about 20 firefighters battling the blaze. Members of the family living in the house had initially fought the fire with buckets of water, which helped in saving the home. It's believed the house can be repaired.
The Red Cross and medical services arrived on site and provided immediate care for the family.
The community of Machiasport quickly responded through social media posts, organizing support for the family through donated items. It was reported by mid‑afternoon the next day that the fire department and town office had already received a substantial amount of goods. Anyone looking to donate or help is advised to call the town office at 255‑4516.
