The body of a deceased St. Andrews man was found on a beach in Robbinston on July 7. Richard Warnell, 64, had been the subject of a missing person investigation by the RCMP since July 3.
Keith Grewe, who owns the Brewer House near the Redclyffe Shore Motor Inn on Route 1, found the body at about 2 p.m. on his beach, which is at the mouth of the St. Croix River and about a mile from St. Andrews. He says the body was near the high-tide mark, with the tide leaving it there as it went out. His first thought was, "What's that?" Then he wondered if it might be a mannequin, before he realized, to his disbelief, that it was a body, which was face down, with the man having a ring on his left hand. He says that the body was not that decomposed. "I would guess it was in the water a day or two," he surmises.
After law enforcement officers arrived, they took Warnell's body by skiff to the Robbinston boat landing. Grewe says they found a wallet in Warnell's pocket that had his name and address.
Maine State Police Corporal Micah Perkins, who responded to the call, says the body was taken to the state Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Augusta for an autopsy to formally determine the identity and the cause and manner of death.
Perkins says the state police have been working closely with the RCMP on the missing person case. He declines to speculate on how long the body was in the water or the cause of death, saying the circumstances surrounding his death are now being investigated by the RCMP. "There's no reason to believe he died in the U.S.," the corporal states.
Other agencies that responded, along with the Maine State Police, were the Maine Marine Patrol, U.S. Border Patrol, Robbinston Fire Department and Calais Fire-EMS.
Jullie Rogers-Marsh, media relations officer with the RCMP, reports that the RCMP received a missing person report on July 3 concerning Warnell and that he had not been seen since July 2. The RCMP tried to locate him and are now trying to determine how he ended up being the water. The case is being investigated as a sudden death, with no evidence of foul play at this point.
