Lobster fishermen feel pinch of low prices, rising costs

Bad weather, rising costs and a sharp drop in price caused by a weakened U.S. dollar are leaving fishermen apprehensive at the start of the New Brunswick lobster season, which opened on November 13. Catches, though, are picking up now that the winds have died down.

Maine BEP denies LNG firm's request to refile application

A request by Downeast LNG to withdraw its application before the Maine Board of Environmental Protection (BEP) for the construction of a liquefied natural gas (LNG) facility at Mill Cove in Robbinston was denied October 25 by the board in a 5-3 vote.

Domtar closure leaves 150 out of work Workers face uncertain future

Approximately 150 workers are affected by the decision of Domtar Corporation to permanently close down its paper machine and supporting sheeter in Baileyville. The company is continuing to operate its pulp mill, which employs 300 workers.

Former Mearl site eyed by land-based fish farm company

A proposal by a land-based salmon farming company to lease part of the property at the former Mearl Corporation site at Broad Cove in Eastport has been made to the Eastport Port Authority.
