Organizers of the Women's March on Washington, held on January 21, report well over 500,000 people came to march, speak and make their voices heard, with additional solidarity marches held around the nation and the world.

The passing of an inspirational Passamaquoddy culture-bearer, environmentalist and teacher is being mourned not only in his community but throughout the region. David Moses Bridges, 54, had battled cancer for several years and died on January 20 at Sipayik, in his Passamaquoddy homeland.

Food pantries in Washington and Charlotte counties are holding their own as the colder months of winter begin, and all are dependent upon the generosity of volunteers as well as financial patrons.

What started 30 years ago as an enchantment with Africa has led Lubec resident and former Maine House Representative Katherine Cassidy to plan to spend most of 2017 working in Kenya and Uganda. The love affair began when she visited Africa for a safari in 1987.

This holiday season, despite the poor economy, the spirit of Christmas is evident in Charlotte and Washington counties as people give to neighbors who are less fortunate.
