Food pantries in Washington and Charlotte counties are holding their own as the colder months of winter begin, and all are dependent upon the generosity of volunteers as well as financial patrons.

There are a lot of things that would lead a rock star to visit Lubec. But what would entice a rock star to move to Lubec and then call the town home? That question was put to Deb Lindsay, the new owner of Northern Tides and wife of Mark Lindsay, original lead singer for Paul Revere and the Raiders.

Why does recycling matter? If this question is put to a group of five students at the Lubec Elementary School, the answer will come back loud and clear. "We live here," says one. "We want the place to be nice." "We don't want that junk ending up in the ocean," says another.

What started out with four men meeting for an addiction recovery support group has grown quickly to a recent attendance of 64 men, women and family members affected by addiction in one way or another.

Wreath-making is under way in several Downeast locations, a sure sign that the holidays are beginning. The wreath-making season runs from November first until about December 15.
