The city of Eastport has been fortunate to have had many advocates since it was first settled over two centuries ago, but it lost a special son with the passing of John Pike Grady on September 3.

As in past summers, Neighbors Helping Neighbors' volunteer work camp groups of more than 400 trained teens and adult supervisors have come, despite fuel costs, from across the country to Lubec and other towns Downeast.

Speakers at a public energy forum hosted by Maine State Senator Kevin Raye and Husson College described the present high cost of energy as a crisis situation for Washington County as well as for the nation.

The Machias Valley Grange Hall once housed the Grange organization, which was started in the 1800s as an answer to union-organizing and intended to protect farm families' rights and local agriculture.

Fishermen, wrinklers and lobstermen joined environmental activists on Saturday, July 19, at the Lubec harbor to protest against the harvesting of rockweed in Cobscook Bay. The unlikely allies maintain that the harvesting has and will damage the bay and the Gulf of Maine, into which it empties.

Despite daunting setbacks, a determined group of volunteers not only saved the day but multiplied it for Lubec's gala July 4th celebration. Before the celebration, pretty containers in local outlets still give shoppers the chance to donate for prizes and raffles.
