At the March 7 meeting of the Eastport School Committee, Superintendent Arthur Wittine expressed his "extreme disappointment" about a meeting held recently in Baileyville to discuss the idea of consolidating the Eastport, Calais and Baileyville high schools.

The Maine commissioner of education has given the communities of Cutler, Machiasport and Whiting permission to form a new school union. Susan Gendron, in a letter to MSAD 77 dated March 6, states that she has approved its dissolution agreement, which will become effective on July 1 of this year.

School Union 104 Superintendent Arthur Wittine is resigning at the end of this school year to accept the superintendent's position for Union 93, which covers Blue Hill, Brooksville, Castine and Penobscot.

Supporters of small schools in Maine have been pressing their case that the state's new funding formula is unfair in its distribution of funds to rural schools, as preliminary state subsidy figures were released last week.

On December 15, Pembroke residents, by a vote of 60 to 54, supported a proposal to borrow $190,000 for a four-classroom/two bathroom modular building at the Pembroke Elementary School.

Voters turned out at the polls on December 15 in Perry to cast ballots on whether or not to support a referendum question, requested by the school committee, to build a four-room modular classroom onto the Perry Elementary School.
