A special archery hunt to reduce the deer herd in Eastport will be held during the last two weeks of December this year, after the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife (IFW) Advisory Council approved the hunt at a meeting on November 21.

"We are 35,000 people living in a 3,400 square-mile area, and we, as the commissioners, do not take the budget process lightly," stated Chris Gardner, chairman of the Washington County commissioners, prior to the board's final review and acceptance of the proposed operating budget for 2017.

The City of Calais is challenging the recently proposed Washington County budget, which increases the city's expected contribution by over 5% to $288,000. The discussion over how the city will proceed was the primary topic at a city council meeting held on November 17.
