The investigation into the shooting death of a 17 year old New York man found in Machias on November 4 has led to the arrests of three men in connection with the homicide, which police now say was drug related. One man was arrested in Massachusetts, while two others were taken into custody in Texas.
Maine State Police have advised that on the morning of November 19 Nathanael Genao, 23, of New Bedford, Mass., was arrested without incident at his home by the Massachusetts State Police Violent Fugitive Apprehension Section and the New Bedford Police Department. Genao has been charged with felony murder in connection with the drug-related shooting death of 17 year old Brandin Guerrero of Massapequa, N.Y.
Later that same day the Fort Worth Texas Police Department, acting on information provided by the Maine State Police Major Crimes Unit North, arrested Juan Ortiz, 27, of Concord, N.H., for murder and Emanuel Ramos, 30, of Roxbury, Mass., for felony murder.
The investigation into Guerrero's death began in the early morning hours of November 4, when Machias residents reported hearing multiple gunshots. At 12:24 a.m. the Washington County Sheriff's Office received a complaint of what sounded like gunshots near High Street. The sheriff's department responded to the area but did not locate any people or vehicles that seemed suspicious.
Hours later a woman leaving for work spotted Guerrero's body at the edge of her property and immediately called authorities. For most of the day and well into the night a large section of High Street was cordoned off with police tape, as members of Maine State Police Major Crimes Unit and its evidence response team arrived on site later that afternoon.
This case marks the fourth homicide over a span of two years in Machias. In February 2020, Thomas Bonfanti of Northfield was arrested and charged with three murders during a shooting spree that saw two Machias residents and one Jonesboro resident killed. Bonfanti is scheduled to go to trial in Belfast in May 2022.
Maine State Police continue to actively investigate the case.
