What makes this year's late June/early July calendar different from any other? It's non-stop excitement, filled with more events added daily, all revolving around Lubec's one-of-a-kind anniversary, its grand upcoming bicentennial.
What makes this year's late June/early July calendar different from any other? It's non-stop excitement, filled with more events added daily, all revolving around Lubec's one-of-a-kind anniversary, its grand upcoming bicentennial.
During a recent informal get-together of committee members Rachel Rubeor and Ruta Jordans, the duo highlighted planned activities. "Marathon runs, concerts, beauty pageants, history re-enactments," spouts Rubeor. "The committee's getting it all in place, along with salmon relays, pet shows, kids' games and giant yard sales of antiques and other treasures from Lubec's historic past and always remarkable present."
Jordans breaks in to mention the "biggest ever community birthday party, plus rarely seen old-time downtown photo exhibits." She pauses for breath. "And art auctions, barbecues, parades...
Rubeor promptly tops her, exulting, "And hundreds or more visitors on hand invited to celebrate with residents at the great jubilee programs scheduled for Monument Park and the country's easternmost Quoddy Light!"
Simultaneously, both remember still more. "And movies and visiting celebrities and a theater revival of a real-life local story known county-wide!"
The two committee members grow momentarily quiet as they focus on how local groups are proceeding. "Everyone wants to make their plans the best," they point out, "and the important thing for all of us to keep in mind is cooperation." Jordans stresses, "We must work as a team so dates don't conflict."
Rubeor nods, noting, "Our central information numbers are either 888-347-9302 or 207-733-2997. One or the other should be on every group's agenda to phone before scheduling an event, so it can fit best into the overall calendar and draw the most attendance."
The clock in the Lubec Historical Society window continues ticking, making the June 21 start of the bicentennial just two months and two weeks away. The countdown starts.
