Allen, Burns, Alexander win primary races

Maine residents who voted in the June 10 primary election decided a number of contested elections between candidates of the same party, as well as a bond issue, and local school budget validation questions. In eastern Washington County, Lubec voters were the only ones to reject the school budget recommended by their school board. In that community, it was defeated by eight votes, 136 to 144. Eastport residents voted in favor of their proposed $3,221,824 school budget, 154 to 107. Calais, Charlotte, Dennysville, Perry and Robbinston voters also approved their school budgets.
In Washington County races, Republican Judith Alexander defeated Martin Ingham of Robbinston and will oppose Democratic Rep. Anne Perry of Calais for the District 31 seat in the Maine House of Representatives. Ingham did win his home town of Robbinston. According to unofficial tallies, with almost all of the precincts reporting, Alexander received 206 votes and Ingham garnered 110, for a margin of 65% to 35%.
In House District 32, the Republican candidate will be David Burns of Whiting, who narrowly defeated Tony Maker of Machiasport. He will face Democratic candidate Katherine Cassidy of Machias in the November election. According to unofficial tallies, Burns received 314 votes, or 53%, to 280 votes, or 47%, for Maker.
The County Commission District 2 Democratic primary was won by former state legislator Albion Goodwin of Pembroke, who defeated Daniel Swain of Machias. He will face Republican incumbent Christopher Gardner of Edmunds in the fall. Goodwin received 261 votes, or 57%, to 195 votes, or 43%, for Swain.
Tom Allen of Portland, who has represented Maine's 1st District since 1996, defeated Thomas Ledue of Springvale for the Democratic nomination for the U.S. Senate seat currently occupied by Senator Susan Collins of Bangor. According to unofficial statewide tallies, Allen received 85.4% of the votes to 14.6% for Ledue.
Voters statewide favored the $29.7 million bond issue for natural resource, agricultural and transportation infrastructure that will leverage $29.78 million in other funds. Locally, Baileyville, Charlotte, Edmunds, Perry, Pleasant Point and Whiting voters did not favor the bond issue, and in Eastport it was approved by a single vote. The unofficial statewide results were 58% for the infrastructure bond and 41.6% against it.

Calais residents voted on two changes to the city charter. They rejected, 117 to 137, Question 1, which would have authorized the city council to borrow more than 25% of the unencumbered debt limitation without going to referendum. Calais voters favored, 181 to 72, Question 2, which concerned appeal procedures for departments heads in event of disciplinary actions by the manager. Voters in Calais were in favor, 178 to 79, of the municipal referendum to refinance a water bond.
