Fourth to make big splash

Despite daunting setbacks, a determined group of volunteers not only saved the day but multiplied it for Lubec's gala July 4th celebration. Before the celebration, pretty containers in local outlets still give shoppers the chance to donate for prizes and raffles.

On Thursday, July 3, great fish chowder dining prevails all day, and starting at 7 p.m. brave Lubec Idol contestants compete for cash prizes at the school.

From morn to night, July 4 marks a truly flag-waving Friday around town. An all-day treasure hunt gets under way, while raffle tables, a school/community health fair and vendor booths line Water Street. More lures for all ages draw crowds for plentiful foods, sales of books and "trash and treasures" items, and field races, all preceding the grand parade at 1 p.m. Substantial cash awards are voted for winning floats. In addition, an afternoon of boat races and fun games and more dancing led by local bands ends the day in style.

The town celebration winds down Saturday, July 5, with the always much cheered if ragtaggle Calathumpian Shirt Tail Parade at 6 p.m. Before that, the day offers a doll carriage/wagon/bike/mini-motor extravaganza of tots in action, plus carnival games, and a lively pet show of slithering, feathered and four-footed favorites. Other events highlight the traditional rubber ducky race, fish relay, and horseshoe competition. Prize winners of the house decorating contest as well as of raffle goods and services donated by local businesses and individuals will be announced at 4 p.m.
