Donald Trump's stunning upset victory over Hillary Clinton in the November 8 presidential election was supported in part in Maine, where the wealthy Republican won the 2nd Congressional District. He was able to garner one of the state's four Electoral College votes, the first time Maine has split those votes. Trump also won in Washington County, with unofficial tallies showing he received 55% of the vote to Clinton's 38%. In the Quoddy area, Eastport, Lubec and Pleasant Point were the only communities favoring Clinton. Statewide, Clinton won by a margin of 48% to 45%, with 92% of the precincts reporting.
Maine voters appeared, to some extent, to be rejecting government oversight, with votes to legalize marijuana, to reject the gun background check proposal and to approve ranked-choice voting, along with the 2nd District's support for anti-establishment Trump.
In the 2nd Congressional District rematch, Republican Congressman Bruce Poliquin of Oakland again defeated Democrat Emily Cain of Orono, by a margin of 55% to 45%. Poliquin's support was even greater in Washington County, where he garnered 58% of the vote to Cain's 42%.
In Senate District 6 that covers all of Washington County, Republican Joyce Maker of Calais, who has been serving in the Maine House, won with 57% of the vote in Washington County to 43% for Democrat Rock Alley of Jonesport, according to unofficial results. Maker will replace David Burns of Whiting, who didn't seek reelection.
In House District 138, Democrat incumbent Robert Alley of Beals garnered 53% of the vote to defeat Republican Peter Doak of Columbia Falls, who garnered 47%.
In House District 139, Republican incumbent Will Tuell of East Machias easily fended off the challenge by Democrat Colleen Morton of Eastport, receiving 71% of the vote to Morton's 29%.
In House District 140, Democratic candidate Anne Perry of Calais, who previously served four terms as a representative, will return to the House. She picked up 52% of the vote to defeat Republican Marianne Moore, who has been serving as mayor of Calais. Perry will replace Rep. Joyce Maker, who ran for the Maine Senate.
In House District 141, incumbent Republican Rep. Beth Turner of Burlington easily defeated Democrat Robert Griffin of Chester, garnering 74% of the vote.
Maine voters appeared to pass five of the six ballot questions, while Washington County voters were in favor of only two of the measures -- raising the minimum wage and the transportation bond issue.
Question 1, to legalize recreational marijuana, appeared to be narrowly approved statewide 50.3% to 49.7%, with 92% of the precincts reporting. Washington County voters, though, voted against the measure, 52% to 48%.
Question 2, which would increase funding for public schools by adding a 3% tax on individuals with a taxable income of over $200,000, also appeared to pass, with 50.4% of the state's voters in favor and 49.6% against, with not all of the votes tallied. However, in Washington County voters opposed the measure 53% to 47%.
Question 3, requiring background checks prior to the sale or transfer of firearms between individuals not licensed as firearm dealers, was turned down both in Maine and Washington County. Statewide, the referendum lost by a margin of 51.7% opposed to 48.3% in favor. County voters opposed the measure by a much wider margin, with 67% opposed and 33% in favor.
Question 4, which would raise the minimum hourly wage, was approved both in the state and in Washington County. Maine voters were in favor by a margin of 55.6% to 44.4%, and in the county the question passed by a similar margin, 54% to 46%.
Question 5, for ranked-choice voting, was approved statewide by a margin of 52.1% to 47.9%. Washington County voters, though, were opposed to the measure by a margin of 56% to 44%.
Question 6, for a $100 million transportation bond issue, was approved both in Maine, 61.3% to 38.7%, and in Washington County, 57% to 43%.
