Bill to amend rockweed law is finally killed

A bill that would have allowed for the harvesting of rockweed in Maine's intertidal zone without having to obtain permission from the upland landowner has been defeated in the legislature, following a contentious debate.

Woodland Pulp's payment for discharge violations helps river

Monies from a penalty assessed for discharge violations into the St. Croix River by Woodland Pulp will be used to help reduce the amount of untreated wastewater and stormwater entering the river from Calais.

First Downeast Pride Festival to be held in June

The first annual Downeast Pride Festival will be held in Machias and Eastport on the weekend of June 21, with a film festival, ice cream social and dance party scheduled to run from Thursday, June 20, through Saturday, June 22.

Construction begins on new Sipayik school

After a two-year delay, a contract for the building of the new Sipayik Elementary School was finally signed on May 9, with construction equipment arriving at the site on May 20.
