A fire on June 17 brings pressure to deal with the continuing crisis of people without homes in St. Stephen. The fire destroyed the officially vacant older wooden apartment building at 80 Union St.

Eastport residents were surprised when the city council, after unanimously voting two months ago to not allow ATVs on the city's streets, approved, by a 3-2 vote, to allow them in portions of the city outside of the downtown and more built-up neighborhoods.

Some Downeast business owners are struggling with credit card fees that can have a significant impact on profit margins. The fees, which are mandated by state law to be paid by merchants rather than by customers or by the issuers of the credit cards, can reach thousands of dollars of month.

Bill Love, who lives on Boyden Lake in Perry, didn't have to worry about getting in over his head this year when he put out his dock in June. He relates that, in most years, the water would come to about his chin as he was working on the farthest section.
