The easternmost city in the U.S. will once again host the largest pirate festival in northern New England and the Canadian Maritimes. The festivities for the 13th annual Eastport Pirate Festival will be held from Friday, September 7, through Sunday, September 9. Pirates of all ages will descend upon the island in their favorite pirate garb to watch or take part in many events, and all festival-sponsored activities are free to the public.
"This is a great family event," says Donald Dunbar of the Pirate Festival Committee, who adds, "We can use volunteers. Don't be afraid to step up and lend a hand."
"We know they will be coming [from] as far away as Germany to attend this year's event," reports Dunbar. "And we promise a lot of fun."
"Captain Jack Sparrow will return," he says of the popular character. "And we are happy that Whoopie Kat, the top rock group in Maine, will play at the street dance, which is where the king and queen pirates will be announced."
"The bed race was fading out," he reports. "So we have added a Pirate Push Kart Race as well as a Rain Gutter Race for the kids before their sword training."
The festival begins the weekend before with the invasion of Lubec by land, sea and air on Saturday, September 1, at 10 a.m.
Most events during the festival are held downtown.
