Scallop law moves limited entry date

Legislation to amend Maine's scallop laws was enacted after the limited entry part of the bill was changed so that fishermen who have not had a scallop license for the past three years will be able to obtain one in the future if they get one before May 1.

Irving seeks new vendor for former Eastport gas station

The company that owned a popular Eastport business that was destroyed in a February fire will not be re-opening. "Irving Oil has decided, upon careful consideration, not to rebuild its Eastport, Maine, location," states Harry Hadiaris, director of convenience retail for Irving Oil.

Hydroelectric firm proposes project for Lubec Narrows

The Lubec Narrows could be the site of a hydroelectric project proposed by Hydro Green Energy LLC. The Houston, Texas, company has applied for a preliminary permit from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) to study the feasibility of such a project.

Layoffs to follow salmon farm sale

Harbour deLoutre Products, a fish farm company on Campobello Island, was recently sold to Ocean Horizons of St. George. Ocean Horizons is owned by the Larry Ingalls family. Negotiations for the sale began in 2007, with the transfer taking place on February 1.

Call center creates over 80 new jobs

Acrobat Research of Toronto has officially decided to locate in Calais, and the proposed opening date for the call center is Monday, January 21. "We're very happy to have Acrobat Research come to Calais," says Calais Assistant City Manager Jim Porter.

New Calais call center set to employ 200

A Canadian company is opening a call center in the former Wareknitters building in Calais. Acrobat Research, which collects market research data, plans to hire over 200 employees and begin operations there in January.
