As in past summers, Neighbors Helping Neighbors' volunteer work camp groups of more than 400 trained teens and adult supervisors have come, despite fuel costs, from across the country to Lubec and other towns Downeast.

Fishermen, wrinklers and lobstermen joined environmental activists on Saturday, July 19, at the Lubec harbor to protest against the harvesting of rockweed in Cobscook Bay. The unlikely allies maintain that the harvesting has and will damage the bay and the Gulf of Maine, into which it empties.

Back in World War II, victory gardens were grown as a way both to relieve the pressure on the public food supply brought on by the war effort and to boost morale, by giving a person a sense of empowered contribution and reward in raising produce.

Despite daunting setbacks, a determined group of volunteers not only saved the day but multiplied it for Lubec's gala July 4th celebration. Before the celebration, pretty containers in local outlets still give shoppers the chance to donate for prizes and raffles.
