A PEACEFUL VIGIL

A PEACEFUL VIGIL in support of Black Lives Matter was held in downtown Eastport on June 8. In honor of George Floyd, participants observed 8 minutes and 46 seconds of silence ' the length of time that police officer Derek Chauvin knelt on his neck, resulting in his death. Vera Francis of Sipayik then read a list of names of black men and women who have died in encounters with police. The vigil is being held every Monday at 8 p.m., with other observances held in Lubec and Machias. (Edward French photo)
