ABOUT 50 WHITE

ABOUT 50 WHITE-SIDED DOLPHINS were spotted off Leighton Point in Pembroke on October 19 by Markley Boyer, who took this photo from his kayak using a drone. “I’ve been coming to Pembroke for 45 years and have never seen anything like it,” he says. According to Moira Brown, a senior scientist with the New England Aquarium, sightings of white-sided dolphins in Cobscook Bay and Head Harbour Passage are rare. These dolphins were seen the next day swimming past East Quoddy Head, Campobello, and whale rescue groups were on standby in case any strandings were reported. In the mid-1980s, a group of white-sided dolphins became stranded in Cobscook Bay, with some of them dying and with some rescued by taking them in boats offshore. (Photo by Markley Boyer)
