An early morning fire on September 21 at a Machias trailer park claimed the lives of two people, while three people in a neighboring trailer were able to escape thanks to the quick actions of a passing motorist.

Eastport board votes to allow fall sports

Following one of its longer discussions in some time, the Eastport School Committee, at its September 16 meeting, unanimously voted to allow the playing of high school fall sports with a limited number of spectators, while expressing concerns about the possible transmission of the COVID-19 virus.

Area schools preparing to reopen safely

At its August 19 meeting, the Eastport School Committee approved a reopening plan for the schools, with students returning on Tuesday, September 8. Principal Paul Theriault stated, "We want to be ready.

Legislation to alter the relationship between the State of Maine and three of the tribes in the state took a major step forward on August 6, when a legislative committee endorsed three bills that would make changes to the act that governs that relationship.

Great white shark up to 20 feet long seen off St. Andrews

One of the largest great white sharks ever documented was seen earlier this month just north of St. Andrews in Passamaquoddy Bay. "It was pretty amazing," says Kingsley Pendleton of Lord's Cove, Deer Island, about the shark, which was estimated to be 19 to 20 feet long.
