Landfill rezoning approved; appeal considered

The Maine Land Use Regulation Commission (LURC) has unanimously approved rezoning of 120 acres in Township 14 to allow for the development of a secure landfill for construction and demolition debris (CDD).

Approximately 150 workers are affected by the decision of Domtar Corporation to permanently close down its paper machine and supporting sheeter in Baileyville. The company is continuing to operate its pulp mill, which employs 300 workers.

Tidal power model to be tested off city this fall

A one-third scale model of a tidal turbine generator will be placed in the waters off Clark's Ledge, Eastport, in mid-November for a month of feasibility testing. The installation of the test unit is the first of two steps before a commercial project can be built.

School boards that make up Union 104 in Eastport, Perry, Pembroke, Charlotte and Dennysville will hold public forums to discuss partnering with other area school districts to consolidate administrative duties mandated by the state.
