A juvenile humpback whale that washed ashore on the beach at Boot Cove in Lubec on April 17 had been dead for some time, so researchers have not been able to determine a cause of death. They may let the whale continue to decompose on the beach, since it is currently not near any human presence.

To help address concerns about Passamaquoddy fishermen from the U.S.

Five fisherman survived being in the 39-degree waters of Cobscook Bay for up to three-quarters of an hour after their skiff overturned in Deep Cove, Eastport, on January 30. After one of the fishermen swam to shore to get help, the other four were rescued by the U.S.

Two fishermen from Roque Bluffs were fortunate to survive when their scallop dragger sank in Cobscook Bay around noon on Tuesday, January 23. The 32-foot dragger Born Again went down after its drag caught on bottom between Razor and Red islands off the end of Seward's Neck, North Lubec.

Movement toward federal recognition of the Passamaquoddy Tribe in Canada is quickening in pace, as the Peskotomuhkati, as the band in Canada is now known, are currently in negotiations with the government over defining their rights, including fishing rights.
